The Englishman by Jeremy Paxman
Well, this writer has succeeded in doing something that has never been done before - making this reviewer feel OK about the English. Good heavens.
Paxman has written a beautiful book, stylish, erudite and witty. In one respect
this is a coffee table book in that it is not meant to be read in one sitting. It
is definitely too much to absorb in a quick read. On the other hand, it wouldn't
pay to leave too long between sessions - there is a lot to remember and equally
forget, if one does leave it for more than a couple of days. A refresher is
needed.
Indeed one suspects that this book will repay several readings, but in the
interests of this review, that will have to wait!
The writer has taken a step back from his own environment and considers the
"stereotypical" English from go to whoa.
Probably one of the better books you will read this year or whenever. Well done
and thank you, library.
