Kete goes global!
Kete Horowhenua has been invited to the World Summit Awards in Venice this November. You can help our girls get there by buying a raffle ticket at Levin library.
Horowhenua Library Trust has been awarded a Special Mention in the 2007
World Summit Awards (WSA) for Kete Horowhenua. WSA is a global
initiative to select and promote the world's best e-content and started
in 2003 in the framework of the United Nations World Summit on the
Information Society. The Special Mention is for being an excellent
example of e-content from a region which includes Canada, America,
Australia, Oceania and New Zealand.
Project Manager, Joann Ransom, has been invited to present Kete to the
Winners Conference in Venice in early November 2007, before attending
the Awards Gala and a 2 day conference on building collaborative
knowledge societies on a global scale.
Joann Ransom, Kete Project Manager, and Pippa Coard, Content Manager,
plan to attend to represent the Library Trust. Trust budgets do not
allow for funding this event so the pair need to raise $10,000 over the
next few weeks to cover the costs of air fares and accommodation. "We
will happily stay in a backpackers if we have to - just so long as we
get to present Kete at this prestigious event". Ms Coard has been
working in a voluntary capacity on Kete fulltime for the last year,
contributing her significant expertise in IT to the benefit of the Kete
Project.
Kete Horowhenua is a community built digital library, funded by a grant
last year from the National Digital Strategy: Community Partnership Fund
(CPF). The Library Trust has more recently been awarded a second grant
to finance the release of the Kete code as an Open Source project and
facilitate replication throughout New Zealand.
Two weeks ago, Kete Horowhenua also won the 3M Award for Innovation in
Libraries. This award is sponsored by 3M New Zealand Ltd in conjunction
with the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa to
"promote excellence and innovation in Library and Information services".
Contributions towards the Kete Travelling Fund would be gratefully
accepted at Levin Library.
